Workshop: Exploring Fungi Cultivation with Artist and Biologist Matt Gale
This Fungi Cultivation workshop at STEAMhouse provided an immersive introduction to the fascinating world of fungi. Organised by Sarah King and led by biologist and artist Matt Gale, the session guided participants through the fundamentals of fungal biology and hands-on cultivation techniques. With an emphasis on practical skills, the workshop covered tissue sampling, sterile lab work, and the various stages of growing mycelium on different substrates.
The day began with an overview of fungal biology, where Matt shared insights from his research into cloning wild fungi and its potential applications beyond food production. This set the stage for participants to explore how fungi could be integrated into artistic and environmental practices, particularly within material research and biodesign.
Throughout the workshop attendees were introduced to key techniques used in fungal cultivation. Matt guided the group through sterile lab procedures, explaining the importance of avoiding contamination when working with live cultures. Participants also had the opportunity to practice tissue sampling, transferring fungal cultures onto nutrient-rich growing mediums.
One of the most engaging aspects of the workshop was the exploration of various substrates for fungal growth. Through experimentation, participants gained a deeper understanding of how different materials can support or hinder the development of mycelium. Beyond the technical skills learned, the workshop also provided a space for discussion and collaboration. The diverse group of participants, including artists, designers, researchers, and sustainability practitioners, shared ideas on how fungi could be integrated into creative and scientific practices.
The Exploring Fungi Cultivation workshop provided an introduction to an area of study that blends science, art, and sustainability. Matt Gale’s expertise, combined with the hands-on and interactive approach, made the workshop both accessible and thought-provoking. For those interested in biodesign, ecological restoration, or alternative materials, it provided a strong foundation to begin exploring the many possibilities fungi have to offer.
